NEWS – Deadline day ticker

snk
***The window closed at 5pm, and though many deals are still awaiting confirmation, taking Ibrahima Sonko appears to be our only deadline day business.

***Loans of course can be arranged after the closing of the window, which is for permanent deals. Daniel Cousin could then, still go to Burnley, but their loan of Portsmouth’s David Nugent makes it less likely.

***City have taken Stoke’s Senegalese defender Ibrahima Sonko on loan. Well, that’s a good replacement for Turner. Gah!

*** Sky Sports News claimed we were interested in taking West Brom’s Abdoulaye Meite on loan. That interest has now ended as we look elsewhere.

***He was initially linked with City back in June before it all went quiet, but Villa’s Marlon Harewood is a possible deadline day arrival.

***Burnley are expected to take Daniel Cousin on a year long loan, but no deal has been confirmed yet.

LIVE UPDATE – City 1 Spurs 5

City have been torn to tatters by Spurs at the KC tonight. We had no answer to Tottenham’s pace and movement  and were a  shambles defensively. Michael  Turner had his poorest game in recent memory, which is not to single him out but to highlight how poor we were  at the back when even he had a shocker.  We conceded twice in a disastrous first 15 minutes, Total Recall taxi driver Jermain Defoe simply passed beyond a poorly positioned Myhill before Palacios appeared to shoot through our netman’s body. Phil Brown replaced Daniel Cousin after just 20 minutes, bringing on Geovanni. The Brazilian did add some impetus and we started retaining the ball far better. competing for t he first time, City pulled one back when Stephen Hunt’s free kick was attacked by many and touched by none, dropping into the net. Just when we looked back in the game. though, disaster struck when Turner was turned by Defoe who had a clear run at goal and smashed in a third for Spurs.

It didn’t get much better in the second half, while we can argue we didn’t get much from the referee that wasn’t a real factor, Tottenham are a slick machine when they have the ball and we offered little resistance. Robbie Keane headed in at the near post and late on Defoe grabbed a hat trick with a late strike.  It’ll be easier to say who did play well rather that list poor performances, Hunt is a nuisance to opponents and looks a genuinely good signing, Caleb Folan works really hard and should be commended  for that, but the nous needed to have a decisive impact at this level is sadly lacking. Geovanni’s introduction meant we didn’t lose the ball just seconds after gaining it, even if that was  just because he won a lot of free kicks, and Gardner was the best of our faltering rearguard. You wonder if we’ve seen the last of Daniel Cousin. After just two games, last season’s pattern of putting in good performances away and l then being ludicrously hospitable at home looks like being repeated this term. Yeeps.

LIVE UPDATE – Chelsea 2 Tigers 1

City succumbed to a somewhat flukey injury time Chelsea winner after valiantly holding off the home side for 90 minutes.

The Tigers led in the first half, Stephen Hunt started his City career in style when he rifled home on 28 minutes. Chelsea look like a computer controlled FIFA ’10 team with their fast, efficient passing but their finishing was poor, either far wide or straight at Myhill. Parity was restored late in the first half when Chelsea were incorrectly awarded a free kick and Drogba beat an unsighted Myhill.

City had played very well though, especially George Boateng who was Superman-esque.

The Tigers had a very good second half too, Olifinjana showing why he was too good for Stoke with some lovely close control and passing as well as alert patrolling of the midfield.

It was all for nought though, after 6 minutes had been added for stoppages, Chelsea came forward with added urgency and scored when Drogba fluked a cross/shot that crept in.

It was harsh on City but they can hold their heads high after a stirring performance.
