It wasn’t pretty, it was a close shave, but it was effective – City followed their manager’s instructions to grind out a victory by overcoming Charlton 1-0 at the Circle this afternoon.
A single goal by Egyptian loanee Gedo in the 34th minute separated the sides, and while it was a little too close for comfort on occasion, few people exiting the stadium at full-time were particularly concerned by that. Emphatic victories for Crystal Palace and Watford made it a particularly valuable win, with Leicester (not in action) being dumped down to fifth – six points behind City, though with two games in hand.

‘We’re Hull City…We like to do things the hard way’….Still a win is a win is a win, we don’t play all that well but still win….A recipe of much happiness and celebration me thinks..

3 points..excellent. 2 down, one to go of this home batch! Drive it home with another home win! This one may be the toughest…but will the Cup result play a part? Not sure of the wisdom of SBs 7 wins comment….looking at our chasers results! Onward, etc! UTT!

Hard work yet again. We faded second half and we won’t always get away with it like we did against Charlton. Fuller was very ordinary and second half Addicks’ substitutions saw them glide through the home defence far too easily. Gedo looked classy but was left isolated too often. But the prospect of him and Fathi both becoming more match fit is an exciting one. McShane’s injury unsettled the back four and the continued absence of Aluko leaves Simpson disadvantaged and the team less fluid moving forward. Elmohamady was impressive again but we need to have more options in our approach play and at times we looked predictable. Good saves from the Charlton keeper and they worked hard. Whilst not affecting the result and not biased either way, the linesman on the West Stand side was as bad an official as I have seen in 40 years of watching football. Quite amusing. The addition of Boyd would be welcome and we must hope Aluko will return by the Birmingham game in a fortnight.
