RESULT: Burnley 1 City 0

A grotesque mix-up between Peter Gulacsi and Jack Hobbs gifted Burnley a first half goal that proved enough to give them their sixth straight win over a below-par City.

Gulacsi was indecisive coming from his box to take a hopeful ball over the top and Hobbs, unaware of the beleaguered Hungarian’s position, tried to head the ball back to him, only for the keeper to fumble while crashing into his skipper. Martin Paterson gratefully placed the chance into an empty net.

City had been dominant until then but made few chances, and in the second half the crisp passing failed to make any great inroads into an unstretched Burnley back four, though Robert Koren placed one very good chance inches wide and James Chester headed a late corner off target.

The second single-goal defeat in five days drops City down to sixth in the table and it represents a big opportunity missed with Southampton and West Ham both also losing over the New Year weekend, and Middlesbrough being held by Peterborough. Next up is the respite of a home game on Monday against Derby County – who have hit a bit of form over the festive break with wins over Leeds and West Ham. Match report in 2012.

PREVIEW: Burnley v City

Burnley, then. While they have an impressive (though very distant) history in the game, they really shouldn’t be a team or club that administers fear and pessimism to the central nervous system of grown-up Hull City fans, but they do. They are the bogey team, the ones who always seem to get one over on us and whose record against us is pretty darned good, whether it is deserved or not. (more…)

REPORT: Middlesbrough 1-0 City

Defeat at the death, then – defeat that establishes a slightly unwanted statistic: City have now played all of the top three, at least matched them all, but fallen to defeat on every occasion. A fact borne of misfortune from which little should be inferred, or one that suggests we’re not quite there?

We’re not sure. West Ham was a smash-and-grab raid perpetrated against us, Southampton a case of being edged out by a very good side at the height of its powers, and needing to be – and Middlesbrough was a game that swung on two moments. The first was a penalty claim and probable red card not given in our favour, the second an unexpected howitzer of a shot that deserved to win a game that hadn’t really deserved either side to win it. Narrow margins…

RESULT: Middlesbrough 1 City 0

A wonder goal from Barry Robson three minutes from time sent the Tigers crashing to a first defeat in five games and briefly took Middlesbrough to second in the Championship table.

Robson thundered an unstoppable – and unforeseeable – left footed drive past Peter Gulácsi from a position wide of the area to rob the Tigers of what would have been a deserved point.

In a game of few chances but much intrigue, City were largely the better side, and seemed to have a good shout for a penalty turned down in the first half when Matt Fryatt appeared to be tripped inside the box after getting the ball past the final defender.

Andy Dawson and Robert Koren forced saves out of Jason Steele and Paul McKenna sliced one wide, whereas Boro had a good share of possession but tested Gulácsi rarely until Robson’s late hammer blow. Boro went second with the win though dropped back to third later after West Ham took a point at Birmingham.

A philosophical mood seemed to sum up the feelings of the Tiger Nation, who at the final whistle still gave the players a deserved ovation. City are down to fifth and go to Burnley on New Years Eve. Match report later.

PREVIEW: Middlesbrough v City

And so a Boxing Day battle for third place in the npower Championship looms. Isn’t it great to be a City fan right now? That we find ourselves in this situation during the season of goodwill considering the financial strife and personnel alterations we’ve gone through in the last 18 months or so is a glowing tribute to all involved. But great testimonials aside, it’s a game on Teesside that we’d really like to win. (more…)

MATCH REPORT: Tigers 2 Millwall 0

Win pretty, win ugly, win after coming from behind, win with a slice of luck. City can do it any way necessary, and they have in the last four games, putting together a string of consecutive victories while using an unchanged side. A most satisfying feat.

Nick Barmby’s Tigers would rather win pretty, that’s how they set out to beat teams, with quick passing and energetic movement, but in football, as French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre noted, everything is complicated by the presence of the other team.

The other team in this case were Millwall, a limited but dogged side that were proving hard to break down. It was a stroke of luck that allowed us to take the lead, but when we did, City were able to open the game up and prove their superiority. (more…)

Things We Think We Think: #29

1: Fourth at Christmas. We can cope with that.

2: A mixed response to one Amber Nectar author’s view that Brian Horton would be a suitable assistant manager to Nick Barmby, which is fair enough. However, as Barmby gets ever nearer to ditching the caretaking caveat and becoming the bonafide boss, the issue of an assistant is a live one. Steve Wigley and Stuart Watkiss both currently hold the title of First Team Coach, so unless one of these is set to take on managerial duties too, then the need to find Barmby the right kind of adherent becomes more pressing.

3: Whether he takes the job or not, no-one can accuse of Nick Barmby of not taking his time to decide, or of making his decision in haste. He’s in a remarkably fortunate position: few managers have had the chance to have a trial run at management at a club where they’re already a hero and with a young, gifted squad.

4: Where on earth were the Millwall fans at the weekend? Whether the purpose of their collective’s previous visits was to watch football or wreak havoc, you could at least always rely on them to pitch up in proper numbers. There was almost one steward per away supporter on Saturday. Were all the hoolies dragged out Christmas shopping by their wives instead?

5: Given that under 200 made it north and were wholly becalmed throughout the entire game, the decision to have mounted police outside the East Stand before kick-off looks even more ridiculous. Sure, that’s carping with the benefit of hindsight, but we’re not paid to use foresight. Others are.

6: Tom Cairney is a very unlucky young man. He played a terrific game at Southampton when roped in to cover Paul McKenna’s one-match ban, and though it was no shock for McKenna – a super footballer – to be recalled afterwards, the fact is that Cairney has since been an unused substitute three times, prior to being dropped altogether by Barmby at the weekend.

7: The Middlesbrough game on Boxing Day has all the ingredients of an absolute classic. A Yorkshire derby between two sides fighting for automatic promotion – yes, we said it – at one of the division’s more atmospheric grounds, a whopping great away following assured, it’s going to be a belter.

8: We just need a result now. Things are getting A Little Bit Serious. More points separate City from 7th than 1st. This is an authentic promotion challenge by the Tigers, even if no-one outside East Yorkshire has realised it yet. Long may that continue, too.

9: News that the site on which Boothferry Park stood is to be redeveloped is welcome. Our wonderful former home being allowed to slowly decay was a grim spectacle indeed.

10: City (and Ipswich) deciding to make it a tenner for season-ticket holders to attend the FA Cup match next month is both a reminder of the competition’s decline, and a very sensible and welcome move.

RESULT: City 2 Millwall 0

Hull City will spend Christmas in a wholly agreeable fourth place in the npower Championship after defeating bogey side Millwall at the KC.

A rather subdued game came to life after 54 minutes when Robert Koren’s low cross was turned into his own net by Lions defender Jack Smith. Koren then got the second himself with a first time effort from distance after Peter Gulásci’s long punt upfield was headed into his path.

Paul Robinson hit the bar for Millwall and Brian Howard also came close, while Gulásci had to make a couple of impressive saves, but City were decent value for their first win over Millwall for nearly a quarter of a century, and a fourth straight win in the Championship. Next up is a trip to third placed Middlesbrough on Boxing Day which could, frankly, be a bit of a classic. Match report later.

PREVIEW: City v Millwall

Hull City v Millwall … this fixture brings back an awful lot of memories, not many of them good. The Lions have an outstanding record against the Tigers – hello to all zoologists who’ve found us by accident – but tomorrow represents a genuine opportunity for City to take three points off them.

Given how football is, and how City can be, nothing should be taken for granted. We were runaway favourites, rightly, against Burnley three weeks ago and they beat us from a two-goal deficit. The current shower that represents Coventry are one of the worst teams in football’s second tier I’ve ever seen, and still we only won by a single goal, clinging on a bit at the end. (more…)

OPINION: City should offer olive branch to Horton

When the after-effects of Hull City’s top-tier spendthrift era took hold, there were a few innocent victims in it all. We sold Michael Turner, our finest footballer, because the club was suddenly desperate for cash. Boaz Myhill left, in tears, for peanuts because every last offer for our players had to be accepted. And, when Phil Brown was put on gardening leave, his assistant Brian Horton also left the club. This has left a slightly sour taste with City fans to this day, but is there now a chance to remedy it? (more…)
