MATCH REPORT: City 2-0 Fulham

A week ago, and all hope was gone. Now we again dare to cast covetous eyes on 17th place, and we know that another heart-stopping conclusion to a City season beckons.

A few things have gone for us this week, it must be allowed. Eight short days ago, a truly devastating defeat at Portsmouth had, in this observer’s eyes, virtually ended our season. With Wolverhampton suddenly thrusting clear and West Ham having two very winnable home games in succession, things looked grim.

Then two defeats for the unhappy Hammers and a pliant Fulham side tamely handing over three points, and it’s back in our hands again. Bewildering, frantic days – but we’re not going down without a fight.

NEWS: Burnley defeat improves a good weekend

The Fulham match report is on its way, but a good weekend has improved further this afternoon with another defeat for Burnley. Their latest loss, a 1-0 reverse at home to Lancashire rivals Blackburn, leaves them three points behind City having played a game more and with a slightly worse goal difference. It’s probably too early to write them off completely, though no bookmaker is prepared to offer longer than 1/9 on them making an immediate return to the Championship. Indeed, some are quoting as short as 1/33, implying it’s a foregone conclusion for the Clarets.

This shattering setback for Burnley, witnessed by Iain Dowie at Turf Moor, will further increase the sudden burst of optimism in East Yorkshire, and may marginally lighten the darkness enveloping West Ham. Barring a remarkable turnaround by Brian Laws’ men and further decline by Wigan, events this weekend suggest it may be becoming a straight fight between City and the Hammers for Premier League survival.

RESULT: City 2-0 Fulham

False hope, or genuine cause for optimism?

It could be either. Whichever it turns out to be, perhaps we should just enjoy a winning afternoon for the Tigers. City scored a first half penalty through former Cottager Jimmy Bullard after a foul on the outstanding Jozy Altidore, and when Craig Fagan scored a header early in the second half a perplexingly lacklustre Fulham side were comfortably brushed aside.

With ailing West Ham losing their sixth successive game at home to Stoke – City’s next opponents – it means that the Tigers are now level on goal difference with the team in 17th place, holding a game in hand. A more detailed analysis of whether we should be daring to dream once again will follow in the morning….

MATCH PREVIEW – Tigers v. Fulham

We’re in ‘Every game is a cup final’ territory now, with eight games left to haul ourselves out of the bottom three and prolong our stay in the Premier League. Perhaps home form can save us, all five of our wins this season have been at the KC Stadium after all, and we have 5 home games left starting with Fulham today.

Stephen Hunt has been talismanic for the Tigers this year, and his return after five weeks absent with a foot injury is a major boost.. Iain Dowie can also call on George Boateng and Jozy Altidore, who return from suspension and hamstring trouble respectively.

As for Fulham, who impressively knocked Italian giants Juventus out of the Europa League, one time City target Bobby Zamora is a doubt for the Cottagers, who lie 10th in the table.

City look to halt a run of 6 consecutive defeats, though those who look for statistical omens will take heart in Fulham not scoring away in their last five Premier League games. Iain Dowie would be grateful for a continuation of such goal shyness in his first home game as “Temporary Football Management Consultant”.

OPINION – October indecision puts us in the Brown stuff

Hull City are going back to the Championship. And it’s all Adam Pearson’s fault.

Which is not say that Pearson doesn’t remain a true Tiger hero. But his decision to be beguiled by Phil Brown’s presence when he first rejoined the City fold has cost us dear. A woeful defeat at Burnley saw Brown ready for the chop – indeed by any sensible modern standard he’d been on borrowed time since the summer, maybe even before then.

But a late Vennegoor of Hesselink winner the following week against Stoke City and subsequent decent performances at home to West Ham (with 10 men) and Everton (with twelve men, Bullard’s influence from the touchline supplementing the starting XI), then a fine second half effort at Eastlands drew our chairman into thinking a corner had been turned.

It hadn’t, as amply demonstrated when Bullard suffered knee-ouch the following week and all the good work was undone. Brown returned to his daft formations, imagining we are a side that can rely on defending and even hailing a feeble 0-0 against Blackburn Odious as a success. Sixteen games and one – admittedly impressive – win later and Pearson finally wielded the axe. But it was too late.

Of course the blame for City’s demise should be laid at Brown’s door, surely the Premier League manager to linger longest past his useful-by date in the history of the division. But Pearson’s indecision in October was also a crucial mistake – one that the club will pay for time and again in the coming years unless Dowie can perform major miracles – minor ones just won’t do any more.

REPORT: Portsmouth 3 City 2

It was a celebration straight from the method. Caleb Folan ambled like a stalking jungle beast across the byline in front of the Hull City supporters glowering and frowning while those not behaving like egotistical dimwits leapt all over him, yelping in glee.

What we were supposed to make of that celebration? “Look, you ungrateful wretches on meagre working salaries, I *can* stay onside!”

We didn’t actually care.

By the end of the game, we had cause to care even less.

RESULT: Portsmouth 3 City 2

Losing to a late winner against Arsenal was sickening enough, but City managed to take things to a whole new level of nausea by conceding two late goals to lose at doomed, potless Portsmouth.

Twice the Tigers led, with the unlikely figure of Caleb Folan diverting in a Craig Fagan cross in the first half and then scoring what seemed a vital second on 73 minutes after Portsmouth had equalised through Tommy Smith.

But despite there being seemingly little danger from the financially-suspect home side, Jamie O’Hara swung in an unstoppable free kick on 88 minutes and then sub Kanu poked home from close range a minute later to rob the points from City.

There was some optimism in the performance for new manager Iain Dowie in front of 1,100 members of the Tiger Nation, but results elsewhere weren’t ideal, City still haven’t won away and hopes of staying in the top tier have taken another blow. Disbelieving, tear-stained match report later.

PREVIEW: Portsmouth v Iain Dowie’s Hull City

And the fact that it is Iain Dowie’s Hull City means that it is anyone’s guess who will play when the Tigers taken on beleaguered Portsmouth at Fratton Park this weekend.

George Boateng is suspended and Kamil Zayatte now out for the season (thanks to the saintly Sol Campbell and all those apologies from Arsenal players and fans for ending a guy’s season when honestly going for the ball – yes, we thought their silence was deafening too) but otherwise the “temporary football management consultant” (love to see the size of his parking space at the Circle) may well turn to clean slates in selecting the side.

You can definitely presume that Boaz Myhill, Steven Mouyokolo and Jimmy Bullard will start but there may be fresh chapters ahead for the likes of Geovanni, Kamel Ghilas and even Ibrahima Sonko, especially with Zayatte crocked and the gifted but raw Liam Cooper the only remaining specialist centre back that isn’t an outcast on loan from Stoke. For all that, Dowie may decide that the performance at Arsenal alone is enough to find only cover for Boateng and Zayatte from those in the squad of 18 that was on duty.

Portsmouth had their points deduction confirmed this week, finally, which means they’ll go into the game either in defiant mood or totally deflated. One can hope for the latter, but their players still have Wembley places to compete for in the FA Cup semi-final (yet another reason to wish those games were still at Goodison Park or Old Trafford) and this will be a tough old baptism for Dowie et al. However, a win for the Tigers – yes, that would be an away win, please keep reading – would be just the kickstart needed for this mini-season of nine games with survival at its end. The intrigue makes the trip down worth it; let’s hope the outcome similarly makes the return journey so.

NEWS: Villa game finally rearranged

Eight weeks after it was postponed, City and Aston Villa have finally agreed upon a date for their fixture at the Circle.

The original game had to be put back after Aston Villa reached the League Cup final back in January, and the match will now take place on Wednesday 21st April (7.45pm). It’ll be City’s fourth-to-last game of the season, sandwiched between Birmingham away and Sunderland at the Circle, and means that three of the last four matches will all be played at home. A deliberate move by City? Not a bad one if so.

NEWS : Dowie announced as new City manager

The man tasked with steering City out of the relegation zone with nine games left is former Oldham, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Coventry and QPR boss Iain Dowie.

A short statement on the club’s official website states that the 45 year old has been given a short-term contract with the Tigers, his obvious and immediate task being to keep City in the Premier League. Assisting him will be Tim Flowers and Steve Wigley, who is presently working in the England U21 setup.

His job is a formidable one. City lie three points adrift of safety and with a hefty goal difference deficit – however, with relegation-certainties Portsmouth providing his first opposition on Saturday he at least has the chance to make a winning start. More to come…
