PREVIEW – City v Blackburn

Defensive troubles dominate Phil Brown’s thinking ahead of the visit of his old mucker Sam Allardyce and his Blackburn Rovers side to the KC Stadium tomorrow.

Left back Andy Dawson and central defender Anthony Gardner picked up thigh and knee injuries respectively during the defeat at Aston Villa last week and have not trained at all.

A ready-made replacement for Dawson awaits in the shape of Kevin Kilbane, a change which many feel is overdue even without an injury to Dawson, but replacing Gardner will be more tricky, with the raw duo of Liam Cooper and Steven Mouyokolo and unconvincing (and almost entirely forgotten) loanee Ibrahima Sonko the only obvious candidates. If Dawson makes it, Kilbane could also slot into the centre.

Of course, there is also a gap, nay a yawning chasm, a crevice of immeasurable girth, to fill to in Jimmy Bullard’s absence, though Brown is likely to revert back to 4-4-2 and choose Geovanni up front, leaving Dean Marney and George Boateng as the midfield pairing. However, Seyi Olofinjana is available after hamstring trouble and, given his last City game was his scoring appearance against Stoke City, may be seen as ideal to freshen up the central midfield. And Brown has even mentioned Tom Cairney this week, whose debut in the Premier League is long overdue, though his best hope is  still probably the bench.

Finally, one hopes and prays that Brown has noticed Matt Duke’s incompetence of late and restores Boaz Myhill, who regained his fitness ages ago, to the position of goalkeeper.

This is a very winnable game for City, and the emphasis on that cannot be underestimated given that four of the subsequent five Premier League matches are essentially no-brainers against Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Therefore, three points against a side who won 2-1 at the Circle in depressing circumstances last season would be both welcome and crucial.

NOT THE NEWS : To prevent further injury, Bullard will play on a Segway from now on, Tigers announce.

segway

In a remarkable turn of events, Jimmy Bullard has been declared fit to face Blackburn on Saturday, providing he plays on a Segway. With the floppy haired fop once again suffering from a knacked knee, City have moved to protect their £5M investment by purchasing a £3,200 personal transporter for the midfielder. “This may limit Jimmy in terms of going up for headers and the like” said Phil Brown, “but it does protect him from needless wear and tear on the knee joints, and means we can throw him back into action 8 weeks earlier than planned.”

NEWS – Bullard out for “six to eight weeks”

jimmykneeknack
It’s bad, but it could have been so much worse: City have confirmed that Jimmy Bullard’s knee injury will keep him out for six to eight weeks. That means it could be the end of January until we see him back in amber and black, but Phil Brown even suggested a slightly earlier return is possible while speaking to Sky Sports News this evening.

Assuming Bullard is out for eight weeks, it means that Wolves’ visit to East Yorkshire on January 30th may present a plausible date on which he could return to the side. It goes without saying that his absence for almost two months presents a serious blow to City’s survival chances – but given his distressed state on Saturday as he hobbled from pitch at Villa Park, maybe we ought to be thankful that it’s nowhere near as bad as his previous knee traumas, and that a player who’s suffered so much misfortune will be back fairly soon.

MATCH REPORT – Aston Villa 3 City 0

Take the defeat on the chin and instead spare a worried thought for Jimmy Bullard. Substituted early on at Villa Park with another knee injury, the prospects of the Tigers’ survival seemed to limp away as gingerly as City’s mercurial midfielder did.

It was an innocuous looking challenge, and indeed Bullard was deemed to be the player culpable of an offence by kindergarten referee Stuart Atwell (though he got enough decisions wrong to permit us a soupcon of doubt on this one) as the City player lay on his back.

In a carbon copy of Ian Ashbee’s stricken exit last season, Bullard was tackled, fairly or otherwise, out of a game at Aston Villa but tried to hobble on after initial treatment. Soon he realised that his day was numbered. Whether his year, his season or even his career is similarly in danger remains to be seen. The word was that the knee affected was not the one which rendered him in possession of an orange badge for ten months of this season, but with the luck of both Bullard and the club he represents, it wouldn’t be unduly pessimistic to worry that the injury, if not the knee, may be the same.

The defeat was wretched and made it ever more plain that City’s team need to be inspired by Bullard in order to perform. Upon his exit, Phil Brown slung on Craig Fagan and heaped the reliance for creativity back on to the shoulders of Dean Marney. He, of course, isn’t up to it and the game was over for the team very quickly after it ended for Bullard. Already a goal down thanks to some especially dense defending at a set piece, the crumbling remains of Brown’s game plan soon crashed to the surface and Villa walked to one of the easier maximum hauls they’ll attain this season. MATCH PREVIEW – Aston Villa v City

Phil Brown will probably see no reason to change his starting line-up as City look to dent another team’s ambitions of a Champions League place with a trip to Villa Park.

The Tigers performed heroically to earn a draw at Manchester City a week ago and will fancy their chances of at least equalling that feat against a Villa side who have been castigated as boring and one-dimensional this season.

That said, the likes of James Milner and Gabriel Agbonlahor will pose problems for any opponent on their day and the Tigers will need to remain strong in defence. If a change is to be made, it may come up front with both Craig Fagan and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink challenging the hardworking but still goal-free American youngster Jozy Altidore.

George Boateng is another option to begin the game as a spoiling midfielder against one of his old clubs, providing a little more of a screen for Premier League player of the month Jimmy Bullard, but it is hard to argue against the case for all eleven players who started at Eastlands to get another go.

City lost 1-0 at Villa Park towards the end of last season in a tight but ultimately unsatisfying game that is now only memorable for the season-ending injury suffered by club captain Ian Ashbee, who still has a few more months of recovery to go.

NEWS – Bullard is Player of the Month

Jimmy Bullard has become the first Hull City player ever to win a Player of the Month award from the Premier League.

The Tigers midfielder’s influence has been immeasurable since his long-awaited full debut for the club at the beginning of November, when he inspired a thrilling 2-1 win over Stoke City at the KC.

He then went on to score twice in a 3-3 draw against West Ham as the Tigers fought back from two goals down, and after being rested for the win against Everton, notched a crucial equaliser from the penalty spot in last week’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City, claiming further headlines by apeing Phil Brown’s team talk from the same game a season earlier.

Brown, fortunately, has evaded the equivalent manager award for November, an honour believed by superstitious types to carry a curse. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti took the prize.

TIGERTUBE : See you at Wembley, Frankie Walsh (part three)

Here’s the final part of Mark Herman’s City-centric cinematographic epic. The big day arrives, the Tigers in the FA Cup semis, oh and Malcolm and Carol ‘s wedding, and the bride has a big decision to make…

TIGERTUBE : See you at Wembley, Frankie Walsh (part two)

Here’s part two of Mark Herman’s Oscar winning tale of a City fan fated to get married on the same day as the Tigers play in an FA Cup semi final. In this part we get to see Malcolm’s rather fanciable bride-to-be in her underwear. If they ever do a Hollywood remake that scene will probably feature Scarlett Johansson with her wabs out. Wabs.

TIGERTUBE : See you at Wembley, Frankie Walsh (part one)

Grab some popcorn and discover (or rediscover) the short film that got local director Mark Herman noticed (it won him a Student Academy Award) back in 1987. See you at Wembley Frankie Walsh follows the travails of City fan Malcolm, who foolishly planned his wedding to the lovely Carol on FA Cup semi final day, and with City somewhat improbably getting into the last four (rather than playing Reading away) he has a conflict of interests to resolve. The accents may be unfamiliar, but there is an obligatory white phone box shot to keep regular Hullensians happy, and Tiger Nationals can marvel at the fan garb of the day. Here’s part one, with parts two and three to follow on successive days.

AGAINST ALL ODDS – another look at who’s going down

City’s recent burst of form has been noted by the nation’s bookies, who’ve moved the Tigers from favourites for relegation to, err, second favourites. 4/6 is the longest any of them are prepared to offer on Phil Brown’s resurgent charges tumbling Championshipwards – by contrast, Totesport are willing to quote 11/8 on us achieving a third successive season in the Premier League.

That’s still an improvement of sorts, however. City were as short as 1/3 to take a spill in the aftermath of the Burnley defeat. The shortest price belongs to Portsmouth, who now have that prohibitively skinny price themselves. Their situation is beginning to parallel West Brom’s last season, whereby they seemed unable to put together any kind of run to offer encouragement of an escape. It’s not worth tying your cash up on such a short price, but the omens are not good.
