AGAINST ALL ODDS – City v Portsmouth

The League table shows Saturday’s match to be between two of the three worst teams in the Premier League, as third-bottom City host rock-bottom Portsmouth. The visitors have lost eight of their nine game so far, yet can be backed as high as 13/8 (Boylesports) to rack up a ninth defeat at the weekend, while their only points so far came from a win at Wolves – 19/10 (Totesport) is on offer if you fancy them doubling their season’s total.

It’s hard to make a case for either side really. SkyBet currently offer the longest price on the draw at 12/5, which one suspects will attract plenty of interest. In April, the sides played out a turgid 0-0 draw at the Circle. A repeat would require both sides to keep only their second clean sheets of the season, but given the frayed nerves that’ll be in evidence, plus City’s painfully laboured attacking efforts on Monday, it looks a reasonable punt at 10/1 (SportingBet). Covering it with under 2.5 goals in the game (4/5, generally available) may not be a bad idea either.

With both sides already in relegation trouble, it’s interesting to look longer term too. Both sides are odds-on to go down (City 1/2, Portsmouth 8/13), while unsurprisingly the shortest odds to finish 20th are also reserved for these two sides: 7/4 being available on either. Oh, and the two managers involved, Messrs Brown and Hart, are also leading the “Sack Race”, joint 5/2 favourites to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

Cheery stuff, eh?

RESULT: Fulham 2-0 City

A lamentably sub-standard performance from the Tigers gave Fulham an easy three points before the ESPN cameras at Craven Cottage.

Both goals had a suspicion of offside about them, but given City’s abjectness it really wasn’t an issue. Tigers’ summer target Bobby Zamora headed in after Boaz Myhill had beaten out Damien Duff’s shot just before half time, then midway through the second half Diomansy Kamara steered home Zamora’s cross from close range.

City’s best chance came when, erm… well, Geovanni slapped one over from 35 yards in the first half, and sub Jozy Altidore skied a late, self-created chance when the game was long out of the Tigers’ reach. Opportunities were severely limited in a deeply negative and depressing display from Phil Brown’s men, and none were on target.

The mildest of consolations came with the introduction of Jimmy Bullard in the second half, whose desire for the ball and happy tendency to find footballers wearing the same colours as him didn’t befit a woeful display from his team-mates. Much pondering to do before bottom team Portsmouth turn up at the KC this weekend. A detailed, sickening match report is to come…

MATCH PREVIEW – Fulham v City

BULLARD

The Tigers travel to Fulham tomorrow for their first game in sixteen days, hoping to build on the promise shown in the 2-1 victory against Wigan on October 3rd. That match saw goals from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Geovanni, and Phil Brown will have an interesting decision to make on whether to include both at Craven Cottage as the Tigers seek a third successive Premier League victory over Fulham.

That’s not his only dilemma ahead of the game. Jimmy Bullard is close to fitness, and is considered virtually ready for his first start in a City shirt since his £5m move from the Cottagers in January. Anthony Gardner, seemingly “a week away” in perpetuity, is another player the manager will make a late decision on. It means possibly the strongest City XI in some time could be available, with no new injuries from the international break and only continuing concern over Liam Cooper’s hamstring to worry the Tigers’ medical staff.

TIGERTUBE – Pearson’s first game

Yet more reminiscent fun, courtesy of our ever expanding archive of City clips hosted by YouTube … In this clip, first shown on Look North in March 2001, we see Adam Pearson taking charge on the first matchday after he bought the club out of administration.

That game was a pleasing portent of what was to come, City beat Exeter 2-1 and went on a great run that culminated in participation in the Division Three play offs. Though promotion proved elusive that year, Pearson’s tenure was an unquestionable success, it began with City in the basement division and ended when we were an established Championship side. Our Premier League existence is just as much attributable to Pearson’s legacy as to the Duffen/Bartlett/Walker consortium that paid him £13M for the club.

NEWS – Saturday results seem to suit City

This afternoon’s results produced mostly good news for the Tigers, with none of the teams likely to finish the season near us in the table winning.

Portsmouth lost 2-1 at home to Spurs, a result that keeps them bottom of the Premier League, four points adrift of the Tigers, and of safety. West Ham lost 2-1 at the ever-impressive Stoke to stay two points behind City in second-bottom, while Birmingham’s unsurprising defeat at Arsenal means only goal difference keeps them above us. That also applies to Blackburn, who play Burnley tomorrow, and Fulham – the team City will be aiming for a third successive Premier League victory against on Monday. Even a point would lift us clear of safety, but a win would elevate us into midtable in the nascent table.

Meanwhile in Division Four, Darlington beat Shrewsbury 2-1; maybe not the most fascinating fact observed on here, but rendered interesting for the game featuring a goal for City’s Jamie Devitt, who’s on loan to Darlo.

AGAINST ALL ODDS – Fulham v City

Once upon a time, news of a City fixture being shown on live television was a cause for despair, quickly followed by a hefty punt on whoever we’d be playing. Then along came Phils Parkinson and Brown, and now it’s another thing we take in our stride.

That said, our recent televised outings haven’t produced a clutch of happy outcomes. Assuming we don’t count the Asia Trophy (a contentious issue for we obsessive ground-tickers), it’s been a while since any of the Sky, ESPN or Setanta cameras broadcast images of Tiger success live to the nation. Fulham on Monday evening represents a reasonable opportunity to correct this.

Not that we can exactly count upon victory, for our opponents have a good team and a fine manager. The omens aren’t too bad though – Fulham provided our only double of last season, both secured with late goals. It’s interesting to seek inspiration from them. City are 2/1 (Skybet) to score the game’s last goal and 25/1 to win from behind (BlueSQ). Hmm.

Fulham’s mixed start to the season has seen them score just six goals in seven games, which means 4/1 (Paddy Power) on the Tigers keeping a first clean sheet on the road since, err, Fulham away in March may offer some value.

Much of the focus will be on Jimmy Bullard, who could make his first City start since his £5m transfer from Fulham. He may not start – but if he does, 18/1 can be found on him scoring first, 7/1 to score at any time or a rather optimistic 500/1 to score a hat-trick (Paddy Power)…

The Soul of Hull City – Part four

soul1

For some people, Hull City didn’t exist until May 2008, when the club joined the upper echelons and entered the national consciousness. For long time City fans though, the Tigers are far more than a single match or season, they are the sum of childhood memories of standing on Boothferry Park’s ‘well’, of recollections of Simon Gray coach trips to away games, even of events not witnessed first hand but passed down from a previous generation of Tiger Nationals. Hull City is a rich tapestry comprised of many individual and overlapping threads.

Some threads are more important than others though, and we set out to define what it is that makes Hull City unique, different from every other club in the land. What are the 100 key events, people, sights and sounds that combine to form the soul of Hull City? Not every entry has to be of monumental historic importance, but it has to be quintessentially Hull City… (more…)

TIGERTUBE – A kick in the Balkans (1990)

The Tigers’ recent trip to China to play in the Barclays Asia Trophy may be the most high profile pre-season tour in the club’s history, but it certainly wasn’t the first. Back in 1912 City travelled to Trondheim in Norway to face a local XI three times, and in subsequent years they’ve been to Ireland (1949), Israel (1950), Spain (1951), Sweden (1971), Gibraltar (1983) and Tampa Bay, USA (1984).

Nineteen years ago, Second Division City jetted to Bulgaria for three games against local opposition that would be largely forgettable had they not been documented by Yorkshire Television, who despatched respected mic man John Helm to narrate a half-hour televised travelogue. Helm was no stranger to covering City in foreign climes, he even played for the Tigers once during a winter trip to Bermuda!

Highlights of the innuendously titled A Kick in the Balkans include pre-game folk dancing, Dave Bamber’s critique of local cuisine, manager Stan Ternant worshipping the Almighty in a Russian Orthodox church, Paul Hunter’s Bart Simpson tee shirt and Don Robinson talking to camera topless. The lowlights are keeper Iain ‘The Flying Pig’ Hesford’s clearly scripted links counting down the days until the squad return to Blighty, and Phil Collins providing the somewhat patronising soundtrack.

Enjoy!

NEWS – festive fixture changes for City

The Tigers’ Christmas schedule has been re-written by the Premier League’s television broadcasters, with three matches being moved at their behest.

City’s match at Arsenal will now kick off at 5.30pm owing to ESPN’s desire to cover the match – ostensibly a minor alteration, though one that makes returning to Hull on the train all but impossible, a rather aggravating state of affairs.

The matches immediately after Christmas will see the most disruption, with the Tigers’ home match against champions Manchester United being moved back a day to Sunday 27th December (4pm), with Sky Sports the culprits this time. It’ll be the first time since 2001 the Tigers haven’t played on Boxing Day, when a frozen pitch caused a postponement at York.

This necessitates an amendment to the visit to Bolton, which will now take place on Tuesday 29th December (8pm).
