MATCH PREVIEW – Tigers v. Birmingham

injury

After a week of bitchiness and carping that has seen the chairman angrily deny  fiscal irregularities and the manager trade pointless barbs with outgoing loanee Caleb Folan, it will be a welcome relief to focus only on a football game.

Birmingham City visit the KC Stadium for a game that both sides think they can take something from. Only goal difference separates the sides in the embryonic 2009/2010 Premier League table, both have four points from five games so far. The Bluenoses lie 15th having conceded two more than they’ve scored, City are 17th with a minus seven difference thanks largely to the 5-1 lesson from Spurs, though losing 4-1 at Sunderland didn‘t help. A good performance today though, could elevate the Tigers table standing somewhat.

Anthony Gardner is a perpetual doubt and Steven Mouyokolo’s  hamstring is twanging like a laggy band, so  Zayatte and Sonko should be the defences heart once more. Dean Marney is available to run around a lot in front of the back four however, having not been seen since opening day when he twisted his knee at Stamford Bridge. In amongst the talk of late accounts and Boro-bound forwards has been some bigging up of unwieldy monikered striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who is touted for a first league start for City.

As for Birmingham, they have been ordering extensively from the catalogue of injuries, a tome filled with only marginally less desirable and costly items than you’d get from Argos. Franck Queudrue, James McFadden , Cameron Jerome, Martin Taylor, Marcus Bent and Gregory Vignal are all crocked, with Damien Johnson and Lee Carsley listed as doubtful.

Tickets are available, you should go.

NEWS – Folan joins Smoggies on loan

folanps

Tigers striker Caleb Folan has finally completed a loan move to Championship side Middlesbrough which will keep him on Teesside until at least Christmas.

Folan’s future at the Circle, despite starting the first four of City’s games in the Premier League, was always going to be in long-term doubt following the acquisitions of Jozy Altidore and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, though it has taken more than a week to seal a loan move first mooted during the international break.

As the first £1 million player to join City when he joined from Wigan Athletic in August 2007, Folan will forever maintain a place in the club’s history books but his stats don’t really justify his transfer fee, with only one goal last season – albeit an immortal one as City beat Fulham in their first ever top tier match – and none so far this.

He was a more frequent but nonetheless unprolific scorer in the promotion season, largely overshadowed by the man and boy partnership of Dean Windass and Fraizer Campbell, although his winner at West Bromwich Albion and header in the play-offs against Watford will be regarded as two of the more memorable – and best celebrated – Tigers strikes of the decade.

Folan will also be remembered for fracturing his skull on his City debut at Blackpool and two rather imbecilic sendings-off, firstly against Burnley in the Championship and then a particularly daft arse-kicking offence against Liverpool last year for which he received severe criticism as City fought against the drop. On the plus side, he also earned his first Republic of Ireland caps following his move to the Circle.

Folan is set to make his debut for Middlesbrough in a top two clash against West Brom this weekend.

AGAINST ALL ODDS – a look ahead to City v. Birmingham

Birmingham aren’t a club we’ve faced too often in recent times. Two Championship meetings in 2006/07 (a win apiece), another two in whatever Division Three calls itself these days in 1994/95 (a single point for City) and also 1991/92 (again, one more point). That’s been it since the 1980s, so there’s not a great deal of recent evidence to go on with regards to calling Saturday’s game, though over time Birmingham have had the better of it.

Perhaps more instructive is a look at this season’s table, and that of last season too. Birmingham have scored two goals in five games this time around, whereas last season they were promoted with just 54 all season. It’s not hard to spot where any possible weakness in Alex McLeish’s men may lie – however, with just 37 conceded in 2008/09 and a credible four this season (contrast that with 12 already for City), one fancies they’ll be consistently hard to beat all season, but will need to rely on remaining tight throughout with goals for at such a premium.

Hard to imagine a goalfest at the Circle then. City’s newly weakened defence will be optimistic about avoiding another traumatic 90 minutes against lesser strikers, but there’s nothing to suggest things will be much better for the Tigers at the other end. It could be a tense, tight affair not too dissimilar to the victory over Bolton a few weeks ago. It also makes picking a winner fearfully difficult and few punters will be including this game on their weekend coupons. It’s hard not to be tempted by 9/1 on 0-0 (Betfair), if only because the winnings may get you through the final minutes…

OPINION – City v The Guardian

City’s lack of published accounts has caused a minor shiver of concern here in East Yorkshire, evoking bad memories from yesteryear of chairmen with nefarious intentions. This, coupled with the hugely contentious decision to sell Michael Turner for £6m, has caused a lot of flak to be directed at chairman Paul Duffen – and his mood cannot have been helped with the situation coming to the attention of David Conn.

He is a friend of the Tiger Nation from several years ago, when his articles for the Independent ruthlessly exposed the wrongdoing of the regime that immediately preceded Adam Pearson. Now at the Guardian, his enthusiasm for forensic investigations of clubs’ off-field dealings has continued, but – in the nicest sense possible – it’d have been nice if he’d never written about City again.

His column in this morning’s Guardian therefore came as a jolt. It evidently caused raised eyebrows at the Circle too, with the club responding tersely (and slightly ineptly – did you realise we support a “flee-bitten” [sic] club?) on their official website. We’re promised more from Paul Duffen in the programme on Saturday too – that’s shaping up to be a very interesting day, with the chairman’s thoughts on the present situation combining with the first home game since Turner’s departure and the visit of relegation rivals Birmingham in a game the Tigers simply must not lose. Meanwhile, future editions of the Guardian are certain to be scrutinised by all…

The Soul of Hull City – Part three

soul1

For some people, Hull City didn’t exist until May 2008, when the club joined the upper echelons and entered the national consciousness. For long time City fans though, the Tigers are far more than a single match or season, they are the sum of childhood memories of standing on Boothferry Park’s ‘well’, of recollections of Simon Gray coach trips to away games, even of events not witnessed first hand but passed down from a previous generation of Tiger Nationals. Hull City is a rich tapestry comprised of many individual and overlapping threads.

Some threads are more important than others though, and we set out to define what it is that makes Hull City unique, different from every other club in the land. What are the 100 key events, people, sights and sounds that combine to form the soul of Hull City? Not every entry has to be of monumental historic importance, but it has to be quintessentially Hull City’… (more…)

NEWS – Bullard back in full training

BULLARD

To find out more you have to subscribe to Hull City’s TIGERS Player service, but it appears that this week marked the return to first team training for expensive craftsman Jimmy Bullard.

His return to action had been earmarked for October once his dicky knee had been assessed and surgery undergone, so this news means Bullard’s recovery is on schedule.

For anyone who may not be aware, City paid a fortune for Bullard at the end of January but he only managed a meagre 37 minutes at West Ham United prior to sustaining his knee injury. Much will be expected from him once he recovers fully and returns to Premier League action.

In other news, City legend Dean Windass, now assistant manager at hapless Fourth Division proppers Darlington, has persuaded Colin Todd to take youthful winger Jamie Devitt on a month’s loan.

TIGERTUBE – Back when City were the ones scoring four against North-Eastern opposition… Tigers 4 Chimp-Chokers 0

Sunderland appear to have our number right now, having beaten us in our last five meetings, and while defeat is always painful, Saturday’s thumping at the Stadium of Light was particularly  galling for the Tiger Nation, who had to stomach the sight of former heroes Michael Turner and Fraizer Campbell celebrating the Mackem’s fourth. Gah!

“Remember where we’ve come from” is a common refrain from glass half full types when we’ve been gubbed in the Premier League, so we shall. This video recalls a heartening victory during our ‘Great Escape’ season. Having been stranded at the bottom of the entire league late in 1998, the Tigers staged a remarkable turnaround that began in  January 1999.

Player-boss Warren Joyce brought in Jon Whitney, Gary Brabin and Justin Whittle, making City hard to break down, but we started scoring too. Having beaten Rotherham 1-0 a fortnight earlier, City dismantled a Hartlepool side that featured gurning Geordie and one time England midfielder Peter Beardsley. All four goals came in a frenetic first 45 minutes, and here they are. Enjoy…

MATCH REPORT – Sunderland 4 City 1

Inevitable. Totally inevitable. The very two things we feared most after selling Michael Turner happened.

One – we looked slipshod and amateurish in defence.

Two – he scored.

His goal was the fourth of four, and so didn’t make a blind bit of difference to the result. But it made a difference to us. Us, the supporters who have watched Turner grow into a defender of confidence, stature, strength, belief. And now he was demonstrating all those qualities against us.

And yet his dignity in scoring was typical of the gentleman Turner himself. The goal – an archetypal header from a set-piece (freely offered by the ramshackle defence he left behind) – was in front of the despondent Tiger Nation. His natural position took him before the City support as the ball hit the back of Boaz Myhill’s net and he had the grace and goodwill to offer a hand of apology before jogging towards the Sunderland support, jubilant but maintaining an element of reserve.

The class of a man who was once ours.

So, are you happy now, Mr Duffen? Go on, tell us how you felt when that fourth goal from the one player who could guarantee to make a difference to Hull City’s destiny bulged the back of our net. The player you decided to sell for business reasons. How did you feel? Or would you prefer to know how we felt? Could you see angry grown men almost in tears at the sickening predictability of it all?

TATWATCH – Hull City Football Club Wall Art

Couleur-Crest

Unofficial. Available from: Footballwallart.com Price £49.50.

It’s not a bad idea that Football Wall Art are peddling here, it’s just the execution is dismal. “We understand that football is a way of life and many supporters like to live, eat and breathe Hull City Football Club, we are certain that this piece of football art will not look out of place in any Hull City supporters home.” says the sales patter. Hmmm.

We’re meant to believe the (ahem) impressionist and blurred nature of this City crest on satin is all arty, but it’s more likely a handy copyright workaround. Still, if you wonder what Hull City AFC looks like in Klingon calligraphy you might like it, or if you have a short-sighted granddad, you could buy him one and he’ll not notice the difference.

Perhaps the most amusing part of this folly is the flashing text on the website that reads “Limited Edition – 501 remain out of 500“. Heh!

Tod rating…

PHOTO SPECIAL – City 0 Aberdeen 1, Deano’s last hurrah

He may have made a bit of a dick of himself last season, pouting about not playing much and blogging his dissatisfaction to the world, but that’s Deano, gobby and passionate about playing for City. Though he left under a bit of a cloud, there is no doubting the man’s contribution to the Tiger cause.

He was a bright spark amongst low wattage during the dark Dolan years, his sale to Aberdeen effectively allowed the poverty stricken club to continue and upon his return 12 years later he scored the goals to keep us in the Championship before scoring a beaut at Wembley to take us into the Premier League.

When it comes to inspired play and important goals, Deano is a human highlight reel for Hull City. He is loved outside of Hull too, Aberdeen fans will lovingly recount the tale of the mad Englishman who received 3 red cards in a single game, heh! It was fitting then, that the Dons provide the opposition in a testimonial at the KC Stadium. Our trusty cameraman covered the game…

aber27Ever the crowd pleaser, Deano complies with requests to write on peoples clothes….    (more…)
