OPINION – It has to be Bullard

BULLARD

Much has been made of Phil Brown’s semi-teasing revelation that he knows exactly who he would prefer to have as Hull City captain until Ian Ashbee is fit enough to play again.

Ashbee can barely walk right now after knee surgery, but just to have him pointing and cajoling from the centre circle while holding a stick would almost be worth it to get some life and fight into a listless bunch of Tigers players.

In his absence, however, this prestigious role that evokes memories of Andy Davidson, Garreth Roberts and Justin Whittle has flitted artlessly from player to player with a devaluing consequence akin to that time when Sven Goran Eriksson’s England played To Me, To You with the armband after a glut of substitutions, ending up with luminaries like Emile Heskey and Phil Neville briefly skippering their country. MATCH REPORT – Liverpool 6-1 City

One of the things we fans never get to really understand about professional football is how the little things are forever beyond our comprehension. This isn’t a referral to transfers, football finance and such matters. For City fans of a certain age, taking an interest in the club’s finances was an essential part of the fight for survival, and we almost certain know more than we’ve recently been given credit for. No, it’s the other things. For instance, I occasionally wonder how the way in which managers in the Premier League deliver their interval instructions, and how it differs to the fat tracksuited old bloke handing out the half-time oranges on the local playing field.

Whatever Phil Brown’s doing, it’s not working. Maybe he should try passing around some fags and cans of lager a la Sunday League, because his half-time instructions at the moment are either completely wrong, or his players aren’t listening.

To be fair to the manager (which is getting more difficult by the day), it’s probably the latter. I speak of the way in which City have conceded shortly after half-time in each of our last three games on the road. At Wolves, a very useful half-time lead was squandered within sixty seconds of the restart. At Sunderland, promising parity was handed over in five minutes. Finally at Anfield yesterday, City’s far-from-disastrous 2-1 deficit took less than two minutes to become an insurmountable 3-1 scoreline, from which a rout was simply unavoidable.

RESULT – Liverpool 6 Tigers 1

Hull City’s season went from wretched to diabolical as Liverpool racked up six in a cakewalk at Anfield.

Fernando Torres scored the first three for the home side, with Geovanni’s left-foot volley giving the Tigers brief, forlorn hope at 1-1, then a truly abysmal second half display saw Steven Gerrard add a fourth prior to a brace from sub Ryan Babel.

The game may have been a write-off from the start but that offers no excuse for a truly despairing City performance after the break, with the Tigers not once entering Liverpool’s penalty area in possession of the ball.

Defeats to Liverpool don’t make or break managers, bue defeats to Wigan at home might – and that’s the game that lies in store for the Tigers next. Full report to come.

NEWS – City’s number 10 signs new deal

geops

Brazilian superstar Geovanni has agreed a new two-year contract with the Tigers.

The 29 year old playmaker and City’s top scorer in 2008-9, who joined the club on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer, has put pen to paper on a fresh deal which will theoretically keep him at the club until 2012.

Amid the euphoria of City’s opening three months of Premier League football, the gifted Geovanni was at the helm with the club’s first ever goal in the top flight in beating Fulham, plus a stunning equaliser in the win at Arsenal, a gravity-defying free kick to win at Tottenham and a classic diving header at West Bromwich Albion.

He has also recovered from a spat with Phil Brown which followed his controversial substitution at 2-0 down at home to Blackburn, after which the manager made an unwise comment about drug testing.

Geovanni has played in each Premier League game so far this season, scoring one goal, and remains unquestionably City’s best creative hope, certainly until Jimmy Bullard returns.

AGAINST ALL ODDS – Could it happen again at Anfield?

Lightning can strike twice, you know. Roy Sullivan is cited in the Guinness Book of Records as having been struck seven times by it, and survived them all. So, using his experiences as inspiration (and conveniently skipping over the fact he later committed suicide), let’s pretend that City’s 2-2 draw at Anfield and the circumstances behind it could actually occur again:

City to score: 6/5 (expekt.com)
City to score two or more: 15/2 (Skybet)
Liverpool and City to draw: 13/2 (various)
City to score first and not win: 8/1 (BlueSQ)
Liverpool 2-2 City: 50/1 (various)
Paul McShane to score: 33/1 (extrabet)
Paul McShane to score first: 80/1 (Paddy Power)
Paul McShane to score first and City to draw 2-2: 2100/1 (Bet365)

Ahem.

MATCH REPORT: City 0-4 Everton

Oh dear…this wasn’t pretty. We’ll keep it brief. Three down after half an hour, four-nil losers by the end, booed off at half-time and full-time…this was another bad night for City and for Phil Brown.

And let’s not kid ourselves that it doesn’t matter because it was only the League Cup. It was important enough for Everton to send a strong team, despite their European commitments and trek to Portsmouth at the weekend. This was a troubling demonstration of everything that is presently going wrong for City – from poor team selection to underperforming players, this dire 90 minutes epitomised the malaise affecting the Tigers.

Team selection: Duke; Mendy, Cooper, Zayatte, Halmosi; Ghilas, Boateng (c), Featherstone, Cairney; Barmby, Vennegoor of Hesselink. Not quite the reserves, but very far from the starting XI that took to the field against Birmingham on Saturday. Nine players different, in fact.

RESULT – Tigers 0 Everton 4 (Carling Cup R3)

Ooooh. That was seriously embarrassing. Everton surprised us all – not least the hapless Phil Brown – by picking a near full-strength team which promptly annihilated City’s selection of kids, stiffs and second stringers.

Yakubu, Jo and Dan Gosling scored straightforward first half goals and though City were noticeably better in the second half, chances were few and far between and Leon Osman added a close-range fourth. Kamel Ghilas hit a post late on and Paul McShane missed a sitter but any Tigers goal would have remained entirely superficial.

Questions will be asked about Brown’s handling of the occasion as Everton – who are also in Europe – saw fit to put a proper team out while City made the game a total non-contest. It’s understood the players were kept in the dressing room for some time by their manager afterwards, though evidently this debacle wasn’t their fault. Full report to follow.

MATCH PREVIEW – City vs. Everton (Carling Cup R3)

Phil Brown may surprise us making the first choice XI play against a reserve Toffees side at the KC tonight in preparation for Saturday’s trip to their bitter rivals.

However, even though the new signings do need to get to know each other better, we should still expect exuberant but limited youngsters like Nicky Featherstone and Liam Cooper to start, although there is genuine hope after his performance against Southend United in the last round (and yes, we know it was *only* Southend) that Tom Cairney might rise to the occasion and produce another promising display againt a much weightier opponent.

City haven’t reached the fourth round of the League Cup in any of its guises for donkeys years, and have never gone any further. Still, we reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup last year in the midst of a very poor run in the Premier League, so maybe there’s an opportunity to reach new heights in the other knockout competition tonight, especially as Everton’s ambitions in Europe this season mean that the Carling Cup will be much adrift at the bottom of their list of priorities.

MATCH REPORT – Tigers 0 Birmingham 1

Hull City succeeded on Saturday where Derren Brown failed on Friday night, in keeping people firmly in  their seat. There was nothing to stand up and cheer about in this match, which was a poor advert for the Premier League, and a gloomy portent about the Tigers survival chances this year.

Defeat against Birmingham suitably ended  a wretched week for the club, in which the chairman angrily, though unconvincingly, defended the club’s financial state and non-submission of accounts, while the manager needlessly traded faintly bitchy comments in the press with outgoing loanee Caleb Folan.

We needed a good performance to lift the shroud of  despondency that currently covers the KC Stadium. We didn’t get it.   (more…)

RESULT – Tigers 0 Brum 1. Dismal City crash at home to Birmingham

The Tigers fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to against relegation rivals Birmingham today. The visitors had the better of a first half so poor that it made one long for the gift of sight to be removed, and scored when Garry O’Connor thumped home a header with fifteen minutes remaining to secure a deserved victory.

City were frankly wretched throughout and can have no quarrels with the result. It leaves us in the relegation zone, and the plainly dispirited team were booed off at full-time. Few chances were created before or after the visitors’ goal, and the outcome left many questioning the manager’s position. The Circle is not a happy place at the moment. Full match report to follow…
