RESULT – Tigers 3 Southend 1 (Carling Cup R2)

City eased their way past League One triers Southend at the KC to progress to the third round of the Carling Cup.

Phil Brown made a cool 11 changes, giving Jozy Altidore the full 90 minutes and choosing highly-rated youngster Tom Cairney in midfield. By half time, each had scored – Cairney with an exquisite chip from outside the box and Altidore with a drilled free kick awarded after he was fouled.

Franck Moussa slid home a reply for the visitors right on half time, and for a little while Tony Warner seemed to be the only player keeping them at bay as they pressed for a second half leveller. Then sub Geovanni wrapped it up with a smart volley in the last 15 minutes.

The draw for the next round is on Saturday. Match report to follow.

MATCH PREVIEW – City v Southend (Carling Cup R2)

CARLING

Expect the usual glut of stiffs, fillibusterers and promising kids to feature tonight as the Tigers entertain League One side Southend United in the second round of the Carling Cup.

The two most interesting selections seem set to be a full debut for a match-craving Jozy Altidore up front, although probably not alongside Kamel Ghilas, and youngster Tom Cairney, who impressed in pre-season. Nathan Doyle, Bryan Hughes, Peter Halmosi and a goalkeeper that isn’t Boaz Myhill are also likely to start.

Phil Brown did a similar thing at Swansea at this stage of the competition last season (last year’s Cairney was Liam Cooper) and City went out in extra time. This time round, City should make progress against a team whom we last played three seasons ago in a Championship relegation battle. City won 4-0, and the Dean Windass hat-trick on the day remains the last scored in competitive football by any Tigers player. Southend didn’t survive, unlike City, and have trodden water in the third tier ever since.

NEWS – Right-back where he belongs… McShane set for return

Paul-McShane

City’s right-back woes could be at an end as they prepare to bring Paul McShane back to the KC in a £2M deal. The splendid ginge played 17 times for City last term and memorably netted at Anfield, but his loan deal was cut short by Sunderland who sought to sabotage a relegation rivals prospects by recalling him.

The Irishman suffered a torn meniscus in a pre season game against Darlington and though it was initially thought he’d be out until November, a speedy rehabilitation has cut that estimate considerably and he’s now expected to return to training within a week.

Sunderland don’t appear to want him and they need to keep bench space free for Fraizer Campbell (meeoww!), so a permanant move to City is beneficial to all parties. McShane’s performances at the start of last season kept Sam Ricketts out of the first XI, and with the Welshman now a Bolton player we’ve looked suspect at the right back position, with Mouyokolo and Zayatte doing their best in our first three games. A return for McShane would presumably mean an end to interest in Bosnian defender Sanel Jahic who spent two days on trial last week and was expected to figure in the reserves this week, unless of course Phil Brown wants back up that position.

KIT REVIEW – 2002/2003 & 2003/2004

0204hA premature end to the Sportscard deal left Hull City searching for a new main sponsor, and with a new sponsor comes a new set of kits. It was a shame to see the classy V-neck shirt of 2001-2002 dispensed with after just one season, but Patrick were obliged to design a replacement to carry the logotype of local electrical component suppliers Bonus, who reprised main sponsorship of the Tigers having had their name splashed on the Matchwinner made shirts of the early 1990′s, including the legendary/infamous ‘tiger skin’ jersey.

The new home kit would see active service for two full seasons (as Patrick’s first design was intended to) though it appeared in three distinct league campaigns having been unveiled and used at the end of 2001-2002. While not the most memorable of outfits from an aesthetic point of view, this kit has the unique distinction of being worn in competition at both Boothferry Park and the newly built Kingston Communications Stadium as well as being the primary uniform for our first promotion season in 19 years.  The new strip kept with the amber shirts/black shorts/ amber socks combination while adding a small amount of white trim.   (more…)

TIGERTUBE – “What a ding-dong-do!”

On Friday, ahead of City’s 1-0 home win over Bolton, manager Phil Brown took the squad to see the floodlight flanked pile of rubble that is Boothferry Park, in order to impress upon the current players where the club has come from in the last decade.

One of Phil Brown’s memories of FER ARK must be this Friday night Division Three game in April 1993 when he set up John McGinley’s goal for promotion chasing Bolton, which led to Wanderers fans invading the Boothferry Park pitch.

ON THE CARDS – 1936 Carreras Popular Footballers, MM Holmes

mmholmes

The Carreras cigarette company gave various cards away with their cancer sticks in the 1930′s, including sets entitled Famous Soldiers, British Prime Minsters and Amusing Tricks & How To Do Them.

Among the 1936 Popular Footballers set of 48 cards was MM Holmes of City, number 25 in the set. Holmes, as the back of the card tell us, was a school master in Grimsby, and joined the Tigers from Grimsby Town in 1935.

Collectors could buy an official album in which to showcase all 48 cards, at a cost of one penny.

City ditched their black and amber colour scheme in 1936, instead wearing what was described as ‘ultramarine’, loosely based on the city of Hull’s civic colours.

City wore the same shade of blue after the second World War when amber dye, (or orange, as new owner Harold Needler wanted City to play in orange shirts, white shorts and orange socks with blue trim) was deemed prohibitively expensive by the board of trade.

MATCH REPORT – Tigers 1 Bolton 0

ghettoflag
When Phil Brown remarked that our season starts against Bolton following two defeats, he wasn’t merely being glib to the media, he had a point. In the aftermath of our midweek gubbing by Tottenham, there was as much voiced admiration for Spurs’ attacking brilliance as there was hand-wringing about our hospitable defence.

It’s all about the leagues within a league, y’see. Tottenham, and with them Chelsea who beat us on opening day, are tipped to finish within the top six, making them denizens of the elite band of clubs vying for league based European qualification. That’s the first league within a league, and we’re not part of it, so games against them aren’t as important as games against teams from the ’other league’, that is, everyone else.

It used to be that commentators said there were three leagues within the Premier League, after the presumed top 6 there was the upwardly mobile grouping of sides attempting to break into the first half dozen, but in recent years the vaguely shocking demise of both Leeds and Newcastle has meant a merging of the lower two ‘leagues’. There isn’t THAT much difference between the quality of sides finishing 7th and 17th, after all we beat last years 7th best team Fulham both home and away last campaign. No, the second and third leagues are now compacted into one, now there’s just everyone else, with 14 interchangeable sides that might just as easily qualify for the Europa League if a top 6 side wins a trophy as they might tumble out of the relegation trapdoor.

The last three paragraphs are then, a laboured way of saying that in the long run it’s more important for City to beat Bolton than it is to stun a potential champion. For all of our swashbuckling excellence at the Emirates, Stamford Bridge and Anfield last term, it was defeats to Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Stoke late on that left us relying on other results on May’s final day.

The Tiger Nation welcomes Jozy ‘Big Unit’ Altidore

RESULT : Tigers 1 Bolton 0

City notched up their first points of the season, taking all three available against Bolton at the Circle. Bolton had the better of a drab first half, played between two teams who’d made poor starts and were determined not to lose.

The Tigers were much improved in a more open second half however, and when American Jozy ‘Big Unit’ Altidore was introduced on the hour, replacing the hard working but ineffective Folan, momentum swung in City’s favour. Altidore’s first touch allowed the tireless Kamel Ghilas, who impressed with his ‘like Craig Fagan but better’ display, to smash the ball beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen.

City were the dominant side afterwards, and though Bolton were awarded 400 free kicks from about 25 yards out, it was the Tigers who were more likely to find the net. Man of the match Ghilas and Altidore linked well and should have had more goals, Altidore flicked a shot inches wide and Ghilas rattled the bar with an exocet missile of a shot.

Nonetheless, City took the spoils and moved to 14th in the table, level 9th with seven teams also on 3 points.

Myhill 7.5, Dawson 7, Gardner 6.5, Turner 7, Zayatte 6.5, Hunt 7.5, Kilbane 6, Olofinjana 6.5, Geovanni 7.5, Folan 6, Ghilas 8, Altidore 7.5.
