NEWS: Marcelle to sign?

City have been holding talks with Trinidad and Tobago international Clint Marcelle with a view to him signing a contract. The ex-Barnsley striker, 31, trained with the Tigers squad yesterday and attended the 1-0 Worthington Cup win over Notts County. Marcelle joined Barnsley from Portugeuse club Felgueiras at the start of the 1996-97 season. He made 85 appearances for the Tykes, scoring 9 goals. He was loaned to South Bank tossers Scunthorpe in October last year, and returned to Oakwell after making 10 appearances for the Scunts.

Brian Little tried to sign Marcelle for West Brom in February, but the deal collapsed when his work permit renewal was rejected. The Port of Spain born forward turned out for Goole in a pre season friendly against a Tigers XI last month, it was believed that appearance was arranged so Brian Little could run the rule over the player, but a transfer embargo thwarted any attempts to sign him at the time.

RESULT: City 1-0 Notts County

A first half goal by John Eyre was enough to give the Tigers a first leg victory in this Worthington Cup first round tie. The game was largely formless until the 28th minute, when Theodore Whitmore threaded a lovely through ball to Eyre from around 20 yards out. City’s number 10 promptly broke away from his marker and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper into the net. The visitors had the majority of possession in the second half, but failed to take advantage, wasting several clear-cut scoring opportunities. David Brown could have doubled the lead just seconds after replacing Jamie Wood three minutes from time, he rounded the County keeper near the edge of the box, but directed his shot wide of the goal. The second leg will be played at Meadow Lane on Tuesday 5th September. Match report to follow.
